Seeing 2020: Here’s What’s New in the New Year

Just one month in and 2020 is already looking great on Bald Head Island.

And with the opening of several new eateries, looks like it’s going to taste great, too.

Jules’ Salty Grub and Island Pub recently opened in the marina-front space formerly occupied by MoJo’s on the Harbor. The seafood-centric menu features a mixture of coastal cuisine and Southern favorites, washed down with your choice of North Carolina craft beers, a fine selection of wines, or creative and classic cocktails. The restaurant has also added a pet-friendly deck, making the locale as popular with pooches as with people. Stop in for drinks, lunch or dinner.

Dave and Jules Showalter, the owners of Jules’, have been Bald Head Island property owners since 2000, so they know and love the island from a local perspective. They also purchased the adjacent Honey’s BBQ, renaming it LuLu’s BBQ and revamping the menu a bit. Order the pulled pork, brisket or smoked-overnight, slow-cooked ribs with mouthwatering sides to consume in the beer garden, or order online for takeout and delivery. LuLu’s is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

You’ll have to wait until summer to do time at Jailhouse Provisions. Longtime island residents and owners of multiple island businesses, Harper Peterson and Plunkett Dodge are opening the aptly named watering hole and casual restaurant in the former police station on Edward Teach Wynd, just behind the Maritime Market. Expect a lively, relaxed atmosphere with cold beer and great eats.

Also on Edward Teach, the commercial space at the old village fire department building known as Station 32 is being renovated by another successful island entrepreneur, Tiffany Williams and island resident John Fisher. The space is currently home to Phillips HVAC, Trinity Builders, Revel Design & Build and Cape Fear Realty and Development. Another dining establishment is expected to open in 2020, and available retail space will likely be filled quickly.

One more site you shouldn’t miss: the new website for Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales. The fresh new design is exceptionally user-friendly, making it so easy to search by property type, price range, size and environment. Visit it now to see what’s on the market.

Stay tuned for further updates on all the news that unfolds throughout the year. Here’s to seeing you on the island early and often. Cheers!
