Since its inception in 1985, the Old Baldy Foundation has worked diligently to maintain and preserve North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse, affectionately known as “Old Baldy,” circa 1817.

Over the years, the Foundation’s role has expanded from simply caretaking and preserving Old Baldy Lighthouse to serving as the cultural and historical custodians of Bald Head Island. Near the base of the lighthouse, the Foundation operates the Smith Island Museum of History, a repository for hundreds of artifacts chronicling the island’s colorful role in the Cape Fear region.
