From lighthouse keepers to river pilots, sea captains to soldiers, Bald Head Island has played host to a colorful cast of characters for centuries. Nowhere is the island’s vibrant past more celebrated than in Cape Fear Station, a community whose name pays homage to the U.S. Life-Saving Servicemen who watched over the island’s shores, beginning in the late 1800s. Cape Fear Station’s newest neighborhood, Kitty Hawk Cottages, evokes time-tested coastal Carolina vernacular architecture, reminiscent of the region’s rich maritime history and classic building traditions.
Located within lush and peaceful forested surroundings, Kitty Hawk Cottages offers a secluded setting for a family getaway, just a short walk to The Common at Cape Fear Station and a quick bike ride to the beach.
Formed in 1967, Turnpike Properties is a small, family-owned North Carolina company with a successful track record in both real estate development and the hospitality industry.
Turnpike is best known for developing the Sanderling community on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The development occurred on the heels of a donation by the Slick Family of more than 3,000 acres of coastal Outer Banks property to the National Audubon Society for essential bird habitat. At the heart of the development and the crown jewel of the community was the Sanderling Inn and Resort, initiated as a restoration of the old Caffey’s Inlet Life-Saving Station No. 5. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Caffey’s Inlet Station was one of the original seven stations built along North Carolina’s coast in 1874 when the U.S. Life-Saving Service was founded.
Sanderling proved to be the beginning of a decades-long project along the northern Outer Banks, to include the Sanderling community and a 285-lot vacation home neighborhood in Pine Island. Turnpike’s development of the area strikes a careful balance between conservation-friendly building practices, appreciation of the architectural culture of the region, and community investment along the Atlantic Ocean.
In addition to Pine Island and Sanderling, Turnpike has continued its legacy of responsible development practices in other signature communities in the Carolinas, including Assembly Lakes in Litchfield, South Carolina; South Island Plantation in Georgetown, South Carolina; Windemere Island and Heronwood at Lake Norman, North Carolina; and Pine Island Reserve and Pine Island Club in Corolla, North Carolina.
As the newest addition to Cape Fear Station, Turnpike, in partnership with Bald Head Island Limited, hopes to once again capture the unique balance of culture, conservation and community with the Kitty Hawk Cottages neighborhood.
To construct the homes in Kitty Hawk Cottages, Turnpike has engaged island builder Mark Oljaca, whose recent island projects include the Honey’s BBQ building along the harbor and the extensive renovation of the Maritime Market Café. With more than three decades in the commercial and residential construction industry, and nearly 400 homes built, Oljaca brings a vast range of experience and a commitment to excellence to the Kitty Hawk Cottages neighborhood.
