Protection of the island’s natural environment and wildlife is led by the Bald Head Island Conservancy, a nonprofit group formed more than 30 years ago on the island.

While their work centers on monitoring and protecting the loggerhead turtles that nest on the island’s beaches each summer, the group’s mission extends much further. Their Barrier Island Study Center, located on the island’s East end, provides a base for scientific study, research and educational programs of global importance.
